Some wedding days are beautiful because everything goes according to plan. Others are beautiful because they feel completely, unmistakably real.
Taryn and Keanan’s wedding at Buffelsfontein Game & Nature Reserve was the latter — a day filled with genuine happiness, big laughs, close family, wonderful friends, dramatic West Coast skies and just enough adventure to make it a wedding nobody would soon forget.
Set against the wild beauty of the West Coast, Buffelsfontein was a natural choice for a couple who love wildlife, open spaces and the scenery that makes this part of South Africa so special. The venue describes itself as a rustic “West Coast meets the bush” setting, making it a wonderfully distinctive backdrop for a celebration like theirs.
A wedding surrounded by the wild
There was something wonderfully fitting about photographing Taryn and Keanan in a place where the landscape is allowed to take centre stage.
The wide, open plains created an incredible sense of scale, while the moody skies added drama to the photographs. Taryn’s elegant white dress and bright yellow bouquet stood out beautifully against the earthy colours of the reserve, while Keanan looked every bit the dashing groom in his classic black tuxedo.
And then there were the rocks, the game vehicle and the seemingly endless West Coast landscape — all combining to create photographs that feel completely different from a traditional wedding portrait session.
Buffelsfontein is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including white rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, giraffe and several other species, with guided game drives forming part of the reserve experience.
For Taryn and Keanan, that connection with nature was one of the things that made the venue so special.
A day filled with people who matter
What stood out most about Taryn and Keanan’s wedding wasn't simply the beautiful setting. It was the people.
They have an incredibly close-knit family and a fantastic group of friends, and that connection was obvious throughout the day. There was an easy sense of togetherness — the kind that comes when a wedding isn't simply about two people getting married, but about bringing together all the people who have helped shape their lives.
The photographs capture that beautifully.
There are plenty of polished, romantic portraits, but there are also moments of laughter, playful chaos and friends simply having fun together. One of my favourite images shows the bridal party spread across the open landscape, with the newlyweds stealing a kiss in the middle while everyone around them joins in the celebration.

Happy. Genuine. Uncomplicated.
And then a rhino decided to join the story…
Of course, no Buffelsfontein wedding would be complete without a little wildlife adventure.
During the game drive, we had one particularly memorable encounter when a rhino took a rather serious interest in the game vehicle — and proceeded to charge it!
Let's just say that getting the perfect photograph suddenly became slightly less important than holding on.
The rhino came close enough to nearly knock me off the vehicle, creating one of those heart-stopping moments that you don't exactly plan for when you arrive at a wedding with a camera.
But that's the beauty of photographing a wedding at a game reserve. You never quite know what the day is going to give you.
And in Taryn and Keanan's case, it gave us a story that will be remembered long after the wedding photographs have been delivered.
Beautiful photographs in a truly unforgettable setting
One of my favourite things about this wedding was how naturally Taryn and Keanan embraced their surroundings.
Rather than trying to make the landscape fit the wedding, we allowed the landscape to become part of the story.
The contrast between Taryn's delicate lace gown and the rugged West Coast terrain created some striking portraits. The dramatic clouds gave the photographs a cinematic quality, while the soft light brought out all the beautiful details in her dress and bouquet.
And then there is that incredible portrait of the couple standing together, hand in hand, with the vast landscape stretching behind them.
Those are the photographs I love most — images that don't just show what a couple looked like on their wedding day, but remind them exactly how it felt.
A celebration worth remembering
By the end of the day, what remained was something wonderfully simple: two people who love each other, surrounded by the people they love most, celebrating the beginning of their marriage in a place that meant something to them.
Taryn and Keanan's wedding was joyful without being forced, elegant without losing its sense of fun, and adventurous in a way that could only happen at Buffelsfontein.
It was a day of beautiful scenery, wild encounters, happy tears, big laughs and the kind of genuine connection that makes photographing weddings such a privilege.
And if their wedding day is anything to go by, Taryn and Keanan have an amazing adventure ahead of them.
Congratulations, Taryn & Keanan. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your wonderfully wild wedding day.
